If you are not familiar with the practice of burning Sage, here is a beginners guide on how to sage your home. Everyone has their own method of burning Sage and as you become more familiar with the practice, you will develop your own preferred method as well.
Burning Sage is also referred to as Smudging and both terms can be used interchangeably.
Saging can offer lots of benefits like; purifying aerial bacteria, clearing out negative energy, cleansing or energizing your crystals or other objects.
Saging can also improve your mood, soothe out your stress levels, improve your sleep and boost your energy levels.
How to Sage or Smudge?
Everyone has their own method on how they sage or smudge their areas. I prefer to use a smoke out method. What does this mean? It means that as you are saging the area, you are allowing the smoke to build up in the area. As a caution, do not allow the smoke to be too over powering, you aren't trying to set off your smoke detectors or inhale all that smoke. I personally prefer just a light smokey build up.
Before you can even sage, the first thing that you want to do is find a sage that you like. Sage can come in different sizes and smells. I tend to prefer white sage or white California sage. The bigger the sage stick the more intense the smoke will be. I just go with my mood and my intentions on whether I smudge with a smaller sage stick or a larger one. If you are a beginner, I'd suggest starting with a smaller sage stick and then working your way up. Also, make sure you have a sage bowl or ash tray to hold your sage stick and catch the ash coming from the sage stick.
If you prefer to not smoke out the area, then open your doors and windows before starting the process.
Once you've chosen your preferred sage, you’re going to want to take just a few minutes and think about the intentions that you want to set while you are saging. You may already know your intentions and that's great. But if not, allow yourself a few minutes to think about it. If you don’t have any certain intentions that you want to set, you can just set positive intentions for your mind, body, soul and life goals.
The next step will be to decide on which areas you want to sage and the order you’d like to go from one area to another. No specific order is right or wrong, go with whatever works for you and how the flow of your home or your area is set up.
After you have all of that in order, you will light the sage stick and then blow lightly for about 3-5 seconds on the the lighted part of the sage stick to get the smoke going. You will then take the sage and move it from left to right while setting your intentions for the area and allowing your energy to radiate from you.
As I mentioned earlier, I like to have a light smokey area so I will sit the sage stick in sage bowl or ashtray and place it or hold it as close as possible to the most center point of the area for about 2-3 minutes to allow the area it to get a little smokey. If you prefer a bit more smoke, sit in the area for about 5-7 minutes, I wouldn’t exceed anything more than that.
Again as a caution, do not allow the smoke to be too over powering, you aren't trying to set off your smoke detectors or inhale all that smoke.
If you do not plan to smoke out your areas, you will just skip that step and move on to the next area and repeat the saging process all over again.
Once, you are done saging all of your preferred areas you can put out your sage, if any is left. You can also let the rest burn out in a general area if only a really small portion is left or you can just save the rest for your next sage cleansing/clearing.
Allow the sage cleansing/clearing to sit in the entire home or entire areas for about 1-2 minutes to place a final seal on your intentions. Once time is up, you can open up your windows and doors to allow the release of all of the smoke and negative energy so that your intentions can blossom in purity.
Congratulations, you have now successfully performed a saged or smudged cleansing/clearing. As you grow more comfortable with the saging process, you will develop your own methods and preferences.
If you have a preferred method you’d like to share or any questions, please take a few minutes to talk about it or share in the comments.
